The name apatite comes from the Greek word apate, meaning "to deceive". This is because apatite can often look like many other gemstones such as topaz, peridot, beryl, tourmaline and other stones. Apatite is believed to aid with focus, acceptance, insight as well as love for self and others. It is also said to decrease hunger.
As the birthstone for May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth. Emerald, derived from the word "smaragdus," means, quite literally, "green" in Greek. It was believed that one who is in possession of an Emerald would be provided with the protection of God, blessed with good fortune, possess mystical powers, strengthen memory, intelligence, and even the ability to predict the future.
